A Girl like ME!

What messages does our society give African American children about their value and worth as human beings?
In her documentary, A Girl Like Me, teen filmmaker Kiri Davis conducts interviews with her peers to explore the impact and consequences of these messages. She then reconducts Dr. Kenneth Clark's "doll test" , which was used in the historic desegregation case, with young African American children with sobering results. 1. wow, videos like this really make you think.as an african american myself, i have definitely heard all of this before and its true, we live in a society where black girls have to learn to love themselves. i agree with a lot of what the girls have to say about a gap in our history and feeling distance between ourselves and our heritage. its crazy that our society as a whole has made so much progress, but we still have so far to go in terms of cultural standards of beauty.

  2. Without a doubt, there are many examples in everyday popular culture that demonstrate this unfortunate reality, and whatever people may say, advertising like this has a huge effect on the self esteem of young girls.

  3. I'm agree that we have to define the standards of beauty, therefore, we must know that every person is beautiful without the color of the skin. Being human is the most beautiful thing in the world.
